The advent calendar tradition dates back to 1851 in Protestant parts of Germany. The first Advent calendar with little doors was printed in the early 1900s and continues to this day.
This German advent calendar with glitter accents depicts the Schwerin Castle (Schweriner Schloss) carefully illustrated in fine detail at Christmas. Townsfolk skate & play hockey on the frozen lake. The glowing warmth at dusk of the Christmas market surrounding the castle with it's promise of warm baked goods and wine invites. Windows of this calendar reveal other famous buildings, landmarks & symbols of the Schwerin area.
The detailed picture has 24 small doors to open. Behind each door is a small picture.
The tradition is to open a window every day from December 1st to December 24th.
