A candle for each year. The tradition of putting candles on cakes originated in ancient Greece, where the Moon goddess Artemis was celebrated with round cakes decorated with lit candles.
The lit cakes symbolized the Moon, and the smoke from the candles would carry the worshippers’ wishes up to Artemis.
Today, the number of candles still burning after the birthday child has blown them out is said to reveal the number of boyfriends/girlfriends.
